Okeene High School was well represented at the 2023 Hugh O'Brien Leadership Seminar held at the University of Central Oklahoma, Edmond in June. Sophomores Sydney Biggs, Meade Brickman, Edan Chasteen, Diego Lopez, and Destry Swaim joined 101 Oklahoma sophomores from around the state for this year's program. Jentry Biggs (OHS Class of 2023) attended HOBY in 2021 and returned this year as a program assistant and mentor. The Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) is an international organization dedicated to the recognition and development of leadership potential in high school students. Every year 10,000+ high school sophomores from across the country participate in one of the HOBY Leadership Seminars held in each state to develop their leadership skills and learn how to apply these skills to become effective leaders in their home, school, workplace, and community.

Our insurance company dropped our policy due to the number of claims we had last school year. We had more than double the amount of claims last year as compared to the previous year. Several damages were preventable if proper care had been taken with the chromebooks. Such as water/pop spilled damages, stepped on screens, punched screens, etc….. Inquiries have been made to other school insurance companies, all have declined to give us coverage. As a result of this information, we have had to change our chromebook policy. This year every student will have to pay a $40.00 usage fee. The school will pay for the first repair. All other repairs to a student’s chromebook will be shared 50/50 with the student. The average cost of repairs ranges from $70-$85. For instance, if the repair costs $80, the student will pay $40 and the school will pay $40. If the chromebook is deemed unrepairable, the cost of the chromebook will be split 50\50 between the school and the student. This policy will be reviewed at the end of the school year to determine if further changes need to be made. Every chromebook comes with a case that is never to be removed from the chromebook. We encourage parents to monitor the storage and usage of the chromebooks while they are at home.
