On November 10th at 11 AM, the students and community were able to honor veterans at their annual assembly.  Supt. Mr. Jinkens welcomed the crowd. Band director Chris Alexander performed the “Call to Colors” while STUCO members Bryer Roberts and Diego Lopez posted the flags. President of STUCO, Ty McEachern led the “Pledge of Allegiance” and Maggie Halverson sang the National Anthem accompanied by Mrs. Kiley Feely.  Terry Strader, Commander of Okeene’s VFW Post 7203 recognized our veterans from each war, the Auxiliary, Boys State, and Voice of Democracy winner, Ava Bierig.  Lincoln Williams was named the Patriots Pen winner.  Both winners read their terrific essays.

The highlight of the assembly came as the 3rd and 4th grade sang “Armed Forces Medley” and “American Tears” under the direction of Mr. Alexander. It featured Mrs. Kiley Feely, former Okeene music teacher, now librarian, as a soloist. The performance was very moving and brought many to tears.

They were followed by an outstanding speaker who was introduced with pleasure by Vietnam helicopter pilot Bob Ford. Lt. Col. William R. Schwerdtfeger served in the US Air Force during Vietnam and was taken as Prisoner of War for 407 days. He was inducted into the Oklahoma Military Hall of Fame.

Taps was played by Mr. Alexander to conclude the outstanding program.
